The KU Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute is recruiting for a full time National Certification Program Manager.

The Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute is a unit of KU Professional & Continuing Education. Housed on the Lawrence campus, the Institute was created by the Kansas legislature to train Kansas firefighters. The Institute serves fire departments and firefighters through a “traveling instruction service” that provides 500 training events per year potentially reaching every community and every county in Kansas.

Employees need to be facilitators, leaders, instructors and have a high level of understanding of the challenges of the modern fire service. As a State Fire Training organization, the Institute is expected to help lead change in the fire service through training and education. Employees of the Institute must demonstrate a customer-friendly attitude, flexibility, and a strong desire to help keep the Kansas fire service well trained/educated and highly skilled.

This position reports directly to the Institute’s Director.

Requirements

Critical thinking skills and the ability to quickly adapt new concepts and technical fire service information into new and existing courses and examinations is required for this position.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of 2 years’ experience conducting objectives-based training and evaluation for adult learners.
  2. Master’s degree in Education, Management, Public Management or a related field, -OR- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Management, or related field plus five (5) years’ experience in the professional area related to candidate’s experience conducting training and evaluation.
  3. Minimum of 2 years’ experience managing or coordinating certification and/or accreditation within a standards-based profession (e.g. fire, law enforcement, EMS).

Salary: $65,000 (annual salary)

The Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute was created in 1949 by Kansas law to provide training for the Kansas Fire Service. The Institute is a dynamic organization providing training services through a "Mobile Fire Academy" concept. This concept is designed to accommodate local needs through training delivered anytime, anyplace, or anywhere in Kansas.

Institute staff members log over 185,000 miles within the state per year traveling to serve Kansas fire departments.
On any given day, excluding holidays, there are an average of two Institute courses happening somewhere in Kansas.
An average of 12 Institute courses are delivered each week of the year.
The Institute trains a number equal to approximately 55 percent of the Kansas fire service every year.

The Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute served firefighters in 12 states (including Kansas) and one foreign country—Australia—in FY 2015.
